Gov. Shapiro visits Chinatown, talks business, tourism, firefighting, and Trump

Governor Josh Shapiro of Abington Township made his first visit to Philadelphia’s Chinatown for Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Awareness Month on Wednesday, May 29.

Shapiro spoke about attracting business to Chinatown, President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, and incoming tourism for several FIFA World Cup games, the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

As part of Main Street Matters, the Commonwealth invested $49,800 to support the Chinatown Main Street Community Plan.

“For more than 150 years, Philadelphia’s Chinatown has welcomed families, fostered entrepreneurship, and created a thriving community in the heart of the city,” Shapiro said in a statement. “Today, I had the chance to meet with small business owners and community leaders who are carrying that proud legacy forward. My Administration is investing in small businesses, making government more accessible, and ensuring Pennsylvania delivers on its promise of being a place that offers opportunity and freedom for all.”

Shapiro also stopped at Philadelphia Fire Department Engine 20, a longtime fixture in Chinatown known as the “House of Dragons”, to thank professional firefighters and outline his 2025-26 proposed budget to support fire departments. His proposal includes:

  • A new $30 million competitive grant program for equipment, staffing, and local fire service needs.
  • A pilot program to encourage municipal cooperation and resource sharing.
  • Annual cancer screenings for firefighters to address job-related health risks.

Shapiro also “did not rule out legal action against the Trump administration” if Philadelphia makes a list of sanctuary cities for which federal funding may be withheld, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

“Look, let’s see what he actually does at the end of the day,” Shapiro said. “I’ve been very clear throughout my career as attorney general, and continuing as governor, to stand up for people’s rights and to stand up for the interests of our commonwealth.”

He pointed to the numerous times he has taken Trump to court, The Inquirer said.
