International tourism to the U. S. is expected to increase due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a decline in 2025 when visitor numbers fell amid concerns about trade policies and border scrutiny. Visitor numbers were down 4% through July, with projections estimating a 6.3% decline for the year.
The World Cup, occurring from June 11 to July 19, 2026, is anticipated to attract over a million visitors across 16 host cities, including 11 in the U. S. This event could bring one in three additional foreign visitors to the U. S. in 2026. Interest in flights and accommodations for the tournament has surged by nearly 70% compared to 2025. Prices for stays might increase by 30% early on and potentially 60% towards the end of the tournament.
Estimates for foreign visitor numbers vary significantly, with predictions ranging from 1 million to 6 million. A report estimates travelers will stay for about 12 days and spend $416 daily. Airbnb expects around 232,000 guests to book stays in U. S. cities, with spending of about $142 per night.
Not all host cities will benefit equally, as demand will be influenced by the teams playing there. Matches involving popular teams like England and Brazil are expected to see higher demand. However, certain nationals from participating teams may face visa challenges, although the U. S. plans to expedite visas for ticket holders.
