NEW YORK (WBNG) — In a statement this morning, Senator Chuck Schumer said that President Trump’s tariff war is hurting Upstate New York’s summer tourism economy.
As Trump prepares to increase tariffs on Canadian goods up to 35% next week, Schumer released data that shows that border crossings are plummeting at major land ports of entry in New York.
The data shows that approximately 376,000 fewer travelers have crossed the Upstate New York-Canada border in June 2025 compared to 2024, a more than 21% decrease.
According to the statement, this follows a trend of fewer border crossings over the last few months, meaning fewer tourists are visiting New York hotels, shops and restaurants.
“This new data shows how Trump’s tariffs and insults are driving our closest ally and key trading partner, Canada, away,” said Schumer. “Hurting Upstate NY’s summer tourism industry and leaving emptier Main Streets and stores paying the price.”
Earlier this year, the Senate passed a bipartisan resolution to end tariffs on Canada, and Schumer said now more than ever, this new data should be a wake-up call to House Republicans and show the urgency to take up and pass it as well.
