U.S. Tourism Faces New Threat As World’s Biggest Countries Push Travel To America’s Rival

International tourism in the U.S. has been losing some of its biggest dollar-spending visitors, while the country continues to push for even stricter tourist visa norms amid trade wars. America has seen a decline in Indian tourists for the first time since the early 2000s, and this may continue in the coming months, even as China eases visa restrictions for Indian tourists.

According to the South China Morning Post, the two most populous countries in the world are currently working together to attract more Indian tourists to China. Indian nationals can now apply for a visa online, significantly simplifying the process for them by uploading documents and forms digitally without the hassle of an in-person visit to the Chinese embassy or other consular offices.

Meanwhile, Indian visitors to the U.S., particularly in the summer of 2025, dropped by 8.1% compared to the same period in 2024.

U.S. Faces Another Tourism Threat As China Eases Visa Processes For Indians

After a five-year rift, China is easing the visa application process for Indians, and it is already in effect. This comes after direct flights between India and China resumed in October. Indian citizens can now apply for a visa online, without the time-consuming initial in-person visits to complete the application.

They are, however, still required to visit a visa application center in India to pick up their visa, provided that they have completed the required documents.

In the summer of 2025, there were around 210,000 fewer Indian tourists in the U.S.

The decline in Indian tourists in the U.S. started in February, when the country saw a 1.8% drop compared to 2024, and continued to slow down in March at a 3.7% decrease, although the decline was minimal in April and May, according to the data by the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO).

A report for the India Country Commercial Guide published by the NTTO shows that India is the second-largest tourism market in the U.S., and even brought $13 billion in expenditure in 2022, but the latest trend isn’t in America’s favor, as Indian tourists have started to forego traveling to the U.S.

From January to June 2025, Brand USA, a marketing organization that promotes tourism in the U.S., recorded 1,095,000 Indian tourist arrivals in the U.S.

The easier visa policy for Indians gives China a good grip on India’s top-spending outbound travel market, which cost more than $21 billion in 2024 and is expected to increase to over $60 billion by 2033, according to Research and Markets‘ 2025 to 2033 forecast.

U.S. International Tourism Continues To Experience Significant Decline

The National Travel and Tourism Strategy has set a goal to welcome around 90 million international visitors to the U.S. by 2027. But this has to wait until the country eases visa applications for visitors.

In recent months, international visits have continued to decline as the Trump administration imposes stricter visa rules for visitors, with fees amounting to up to $442, making it one of the most expensive tourist visa fees in the world.

India was also hit by Trump-era policies, including a 50% tariff on goods, among the highest in the world, which includes a 25% penalty for India’s imports of Russian oil.

U.S. International Tourism Experiences A Downward Trend

Not only has India started to forego travel to the U.S., but so have other countries, such as Canada, which continues to boycott the U.S., hitting a depressing new record, while Canadians pack their vacation bags to visit Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.

Increasing visa fees, fewer flights, trade and political tensions, and stricter immigration crackdown by the Trump administration have been some of the major influences on the declining international visits to the U.S.

China, for instance, took another hit on U.S. tourism after Chinese tourists flocked to Russia instead. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently approved a visa-free entry for Chinese visitors, which is valid until September 14, 2026, driving more Chinese tourists to Russia, while the U.S. loses billions of tourist spending.

U.S. President Donald Trump has also issued a permanent travel ban for 19 countries after the D.C. National Guard shooting, which critics say was a “serious constitutional concern,” noting that Trump can’t just impose blanket visa restrictions for an entire nation just because of one person’s fault.

Another controversial move made by the U.S. government was to require visitors to the U.S. to share their social media movements or history from the last five years. Critics have derided this requirement, as it only adds to the declining international tourism market in the U.S.

In summary, China’s easier visa rules for Indians are adding to the list of confronting challenges for tourism in the U.S., as the country continues to experience a significant decline in international tourist arrivals.

With China positioning itself as a more accessible tourist destination than America, this will not only impact the country’s revenue from the two biggest inbound travel markets but also leave an impression that the U.S. is no longer a welcoming destination for non-U.S. citizens.
